Why the Habits You Build Now Matter Most on Weight-Loss Medication

By Chelsea Mae · June 3, 2026 · 3 min read

If you are using one of the newer weight-loss medications, the first thing I want to say is that there is genuinely no judgment here. Your journey is yours, and how you choose to walk it is between you and your doctor. What I want to offer is the kindest, most practical thing I know on the food-and-habits side, the part that is squarely my lane and that so many women tell me nobody talks to them about.

Here it is. Right now is the time to build the habits. The medication can quiet your appetite, and that can feel like a relief after years of noise. But a quieter appetite does not teach your kitchen new tricks. It does not stock your fridge, plan your week, or rewire the patterns you reach for on autopilot. Those old habits are still there, waiting patiently in the background. The women who hold onto their progress for the long run are the ones who treat this calmer window as a learning window, not a pause button.

Use the calm window to learn, not to wait

Think of it this way. When the relentless pull toward food settles down, the mental space that opens up is precious. That is the moment to practise the skills that will carry you long after any single chapter of your journey ends. Not white-knuckling. Not waiting. Practising, while it feels easier than it ever has.

Because here is what tends to happen otherwise. People feel the appetite quiet down, they eat less almost without trying, and they assume the new way of eating will just stick around on its own. But eating less is not the same as eating differently. If the underlying patterns never changed, the old defaults are still the defaults underneath. The window is an opportunity to lay down genuinely new grooves while there is less resistance fighting you.

Focus on inputs, not outcomes

The episode I want to point you to is built around a mindset shift that changed everything for me: focus on inputs, not outcomes. Most of us set outcome goals, the number on the scale, the size of something, a finish line out there in the distance. Then we feel like failures on every day the outcome hasn't arrived yet, which is most days.

Input-based goals flip that. They are the simple, repeatable daily actions you actually control. Building your plate around whole plants. Having a couple of go-to meals prepped so the easy choice is the default choice. Filling up on the high-volume, fibre-rich foods first. Keeping the tempting stuff a little less in your face. None of those depend on what the scale did this morning. You can do them on a good day or a rough day, and they are exactly the habits that make this feel less like a battle and more like just how you live.

What this looks like on the plate

On the food side, the principles are the same ones I teach everyone, and they happen to be gentle and forgiving, which is a bonus when your appetite is smaller. Lean on whole, water- and fibre-rich plants: potatoes, beans, lentils, whole grains, plenty of veg and fruit. These give you a lot of nourishment and fullness without a heavy calorie load, so even smaller portions can be properly nourishing rather than empty. Keep the oil light, since it is the most calorie-dense thing in the kitchen and it crowds out room for actual food. And make sure you are still getting good plant protein in, from beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and soya, so you are nourished, not just eating less.

Anything medical, including the medication itself, how you use it, and what comes next, is a conversation for you and your own doctor. That part is theirs to guide, not mine. My job is just the habits, and the habits are the part that stays with you.

Listen: I lay out how to build habits that make the whole process feel almost inevitable in How To Set Yourself Up To Succeed. It is the perfect place to start using this window well.

Use the window. Build the habits. They are yours to keep, whatever else changes, and I am cheering you on.
