On A Weight-Loss Injection And Feeling Rough? Foods That Are Gentle On Your Gut

By Chelsea Mae · May 28, 2026 · 3 min read

If you're using one of the newer weight-loss medications, the first thing I want to say is the most important: there is zero judgment here. None. Your journey is yours, and how you choose to look after your health is entirely your business. I'm not here to weigh in on the medical side of anything. I'm just here for the food.

And on the food side, a lot of women tell us the same thing. The nausea can be brutal, and the digestion can get genuinely uncomfortable. When your stomach feels delicate and easily overwhelmed, the last thing you want is a plate that sits heavy. This is one of those places where whole plant foods quietly come into their own, because so many of them are exactly what an unhappy gut tends to ask for: hydrating, gentle, and easy to eat.

A quick, honest note first

Before anything else: please loop in your own doctor or medical team on anything to do with the medication itself, how you're feeling on it, and any symptoms that worry you. I can't and won't give medical or dosing advice, and nothing here is a substitute for the people who actually know your situation. What follows is purely about the food on your plate, the part I can genuinely help with. If something feels wrong, that's a conversation for your doctor, not a blog post.

Why gentle, whole plants tend to sit well

When appetite drops off and the stomach is touchy, the meals that work best are usually the soft, hydrating, comforting ones. Whole plant foods are mostly water and fibre, which often makes them feel kinder going down than rich, heavy, greasy food. The things that tend to be hardest on a queasy stomach are the very heavy, oily, fried foods, so leaning toward gentle whole foods and easing off the heaviest stuff is usually where comfort lives.

The lovely overlap is that these same gentle foods are the heart of how we eat anyway. So you're not eating some separate "sick food." You're just leaning into the softest, most soothing end of the whole-food plant-based world while your body settles.

What to lean on

Think soft, warm, and simple. Soups are a brilliant one, a gentle vegetable soup is hydrating and easy and you can sip it slowly. Potatoes, plain and comforting, baked or mashed without a load of oil, tend to sit beautifully. Oats are soft and soothing and easy to make as plain or as flavoured as your stomach fancies that day. Cooked vegetables, well cooked so they're soft rather than raw and fibrous, are usually gentler than a big raw salad when things are delicate. And fruit, especially the softer, hydrating kinds, can be lovely when you don't feel like much.

The general idea is soft, warm, hydrating, and not heavy. Small and gentle often beats big and rich when your stomach is having a moment. You can always build portions back up as you feel more comfortable.

What to go easy on

When you're feeling rough, the things to ease off are the heavy, greasy, very rich foods, the fried stuff and anything swimming in oil, because that's usually what an unsettled stomach struggles with most. This isn't a forever rule, it's just kindness to a delicate gut in the moment. As the queasiness settles, you can bring more variety back in at your own pace.

Watch

I put together a proper guide to the food side of this, what to lean on and what to skip when you're not feeling your best, here: Watch: What To Actually Eat. It's all the gentle, whole, filling stuff that tends to make the whole experience more comfortable.

Be kind to yourself through this, and keep your doctor in the loop on anything medical. On the food front, gentle and whole and hydrating is a lovely place to be. Your gut will thank you.
