Healthy Emmie's Slim (Slim on Starch) vs Lean With Plants: An Honest Comparison

Same starch-first food. The difference is a personalized plan and an app, or a real coach in your corner every day.

By Chelsea Mae · September 28, 2026 · 9 min read

Healthy Emmie's Slim program and Lean With Plants come from the same corner of the internet. Both are built on starch-based, plant-forward eating, where potatoes, rice and oats are the base of the plate instead of the enemy. The difference is how you are supported. Slim, the program formerly called Slim on Starch, is an app-based personalized plan: a custom meal plan and workout plan, a recipe library, tracking tools, a community group and a weekly live Q&A with Emmie. Lean With Plants is a 12-week one-on-one plant-based weight loss coaching program for women, founded by Chelsea Mae Cullen, where a real coach messages you every day, looks at photos of your plate, and coaches you until building a filling, fat-loss-friendly plate is automatic. Our team has coached over 3,000 women, and the average client loses around 18 pounds in 12 weeks.

Everything we say about Healthy Emmie below comes from her own public website and app listings, checked in September 2026. Details may change, so check her site for the latest. Lean With Plants is not affiliated with Healthy Emmie, and Slim on Starch is her program name, not ours. We have real respect for what she has built. She was one of the early voices showing women that you do not have to fear carbs to lose weight.

Who is Healthy Emmie?

Healthy Emmie is Emmie Keefe, a Boston-based content creator who has been plant-based for over ten years. On her website she describes herself as a nutritionist, weight loss specialist and holistic health coach, and says she earned certificates as a Weight Loss Specialist and a Holistic Health Coach before she started coaching clients online.

She is best known for her YouTube channel, which her site puts at over 700,000 subscribers, along with large Instagram and TikTok followings. In her words, her teaching style comes from her years as a math teacher: formulaic, clear and step by step.

What happened to Slim on Starch?

This is the question behind a lot of searches, so here is the straight answer, taken from her own About page.

  • 2018. Emmie leaves teaching to coach full time. Within about a year her one-on-one coaching grows into the Slim on Starch Program, supported by a team of more than 30 coaches.
  • 2018 to 2024. She says more than 4,000 clients went through Slim on Starch.
  • Spring 2024. She rebrands Slim on Starch to simply "Slim", with the aim of making it more holistic.
  • September 2024. The new Slim platform and app launch. The app is listed as "Slim by Emmie" in the App Store and on Google Play.

So if you are reading an older review of Slim on Starch, it describes an earlier version. The current program is called Slim.

What does the Slim program include today?

According to her coaching page, the Slim Personalized Plan includes:

  • A personalized meal plan built around your goal (fat loss, toning or muscle gain), with a matching weekly shopping list and meal swaps. You can choose a fully plant-based plan or a flexitarian one.
  • A personalized exercise plan for home or the gym, with filmed demos and swaps.
  • Her recipe library, with hundreds of recipes.
  • Tracking tools, including a food diary. If you eat something that is not on your plan, you snap a photo or type it in and the app works out the calories and macros.
  • A community group of women on the same journey.
  • Daily guided meditations and journaling with Emmie.
  • A weekly live Q&A with Emmie.
  • The Slim Course, on hunger cues, fullness cues, emotional eating and dining out, included on the longer plans.
  • 12 live video calls with Emmie on the annual plan.

Plans are sold as 3-month, 6-month and 12-month commitments. Her site also mentions private one-to-one coaching with Emmie, by application, for a limited number of women struggling with weight gain around menopause. Her prices are on her site. We do not repeat competitor prices here.

Where do Healthy Emmie and Lean With Plants agree?

More than you might expect.

  • Starch is not the enemy. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, oats and beans are the base of the plate in both programs. For years women were told to cut carbs, and both programs teach the opposite. Our love of the potato is on record in the most underrated weight loss food.
  • Eat more food, not less. Big, filling plates are the point. The reason it works is calorie density, the number of calories packed into each pound of food. See calorie density explained and how a starch-based diet works for weight loss.
  • Consistency beats a perfect start. Her plan talks about quick wins first, then a routine that no longer relies on motivation. We would say the same.
  • Your relationship with food matters. Both programs work on hunger cues, emotional eating, and what to do when a weekend goes sideways.

Both sit in the tradition Dr. John McDougall popularized with his book The Starch Solution. Our comparison with his program is in The Starch Solution vs Lean With Plants.

If you like Emmie's food, you will probably like ours. The difference is not really the food.

Where is Lean With Plants different?

In five places.

1. A person, not only a plan. Slim gives you a personalized plan, an app, a community and a weekly live Q&A. At Lean With Plants you get a dedicated coach who checks in and messages you daily in the LWP app. She is a real person, not a bot, not AI, and not a group chat. She knows your name and your week, looks at your plate, spots your blind spots, and coaches you through the 9pm craving and the birthday dinner as they happen. There is also a weekly group coaching call with the coaches, and a Q&A every two weeks with Chelsea or Ami-James Deane. We explain why the daily person matters in weight loss accountability.

2. We never count. Slim's food diary works out calories and macros for the meals you add. At Lean With Plants you never count a calorie, a macro or a point. You snap a photo, and a human being helps you build a better plate next time. For women who have spent years in tracking apps, that difference is often the whole point.

3. A skill instead of a meal plan. A custom meal plan and shopping list is a real help, especially at the start. Our focus is a little different. Your coach works with you until you can build a weight-loss-optimized plate anywhere, at a restaurant, at your mother-in-law's, or with a family who wants pizza, without a plan in your hand. That is what makes it last after the program ends. If you cook for a family that is not plant-based, see plant-based cooking for a mixed family.

4. Built for women over 40. Most Lean With Plants clients are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Many are in perimenopause, menopause or beyond, and many come with diabetes, prediabetes, thyroid issues or PCOS. The coaching is built around that. See plant-based through menopause.

5. Habits and movement from zero. Slim includes a personalized workout plan with demos, which is great if you are ready to train. Lean With Plants starts movement at Rep Zero: first the habit of showing up at all, then strength over time to protect bone density and muscle. Alongside it are three or four tiny habits that take about two minutes a day, the STACK Method.

Who should choose Healthy Emmie's Slim?

Slim is probably the better fit if you:

  • Want someone to tell you exactly what to eat this week, with a shopping list to match.
  • Are self-motivated and mainly need structure, recipes and a plan.
  • Want a ready-made workout plan with demos.
  • Prefer a flexitarian plan rather than moving toward mostly plants.
  • Love Emmie's content and want her daily meditations and live Q&As.
  • Want a lighter commitment to start with.

Those are good reasons. If that is you, Slim is worth a look.

Who should choose Lean With Plants?

Lean With Plants is probably the better fit if you:

  • Have followed meal plans before, done well for a few weeks, and then fallen off.
  • Know what to eat, and what you are missing is someone who notices when you go quiet and helps you get back on track fast.
  • Are done with tracking apps and never want to count anything again.
  • Are in your 40s, 50s or 60s, maybe navigating menopause, and want coaching built around that.
  • Cook for a family and need plates that work in real life, not a separate plan just for you.

If a plan and an app have already worked for you, keep going. If you have tried the plan and the problem was never the plan, that is the gap a coach fills. We wrote about it in is a weight loss coach worth it.

What does each one cost?

Healthy Emmie publishes her plan prices on her site. We do not repeat competitor prices, and the two are different kinds of product: an app subscription with a community, and a daily one-on-one coach.

Lean With Plants does not put a price on the website, because the right plan, and the right way to pay for it, is specific to you. What we can tell you now:

  • It is not the crazy number most women imagine. For most women it is very doable.
  • We partner with Klarna and Affirm, so you can spread the investment out over time.
  • The real number is discussed on your call, and if it is the right fit, we want to make it work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Slim on Starch the same as Healthy Emmie's Slim program? Yes. According to her website, Healthy Emmie rebranded the Slim on Starch Program to "Slim" in spring 2024 and launched the new Slim app and platform in September 2024.

Is Lean With Plants the same as Slim on Starch? No. They are separate programs from separate companies. Both are built around starch-based, plant-forward eating. Slim is an app-based personalized plan from Healthy Emmie. Lean With Plants is a 12-week one-on-one coaching program for women, founded by Chelsea Mae Cullen.

Do both programs let you eat potatoes and carbs? Yes. Starches like potatoes, rice and oats are the base of the plate in both. The reason it works is calorie density: whole starches fill you up for far fewer calories than oil, nut butters or processed snacks.

Does Lean With Plants give you a meal plan? Lean With Plants is built around a coach rather than a fixed meal plan. There are recipes in the LWP app, and your coach looks at your food photos and helps you build weight-loss-friendly plates from the food you and your family actually eat, until you can do it anywhere on your own.

Do I count calories at Lean With Plants? No. You never count calories, macros or points. You take photos of your food, and your coach helps you optimize the plate.

Is Healthy Emmie a nutritionist? On her website, Emmie describes herself as a nutritionist, weight loss specialist and holistic health coach, and says she earned certificates as a Weight Loss Specialist and a Holistic Health Coach.

I did Slim on Starch before. Can Lean With Plants still help? Very likely. Many women come to us having already tried a starch-based plan, and they usually know the food well. What they are missing is consistency, and a skill that survives real life. That is what daily one-on-one coaching is for.
