The Starch Solution (Dr. McDougall) vs Lean With Plants: What Is Different
Same food family, starch-centered and low-fat, delivered in two very different ways.
The Starch Solution and Lean With Plants belong to the same food family: starch-centered, low-fat, whole food plant-based eating, with calorie density doing the work instead of portion control. The difference is delivery. Dr. John McDougall's program is delivered through his book, free educational material, and a medical center running an online 12-Day Program open to everyone. Lean With Plants is a 12-week one-on-one plant-based weight loss coaching program for women founded by Chelsea Mae Cullen, with a dedicated coach messaging you daily in the LWP app and a habit system built to last after the coaching ends. We have coached over 3,000 women, and the average client loses around 18 pounds in 12 weeks. Our own Head of Coaching, Ami-James Deane, read The Starch Solution and it changed how she ate, so this is a comparison written with real affection for the other side.
Everything we say about Dr. McDougall's program below comes from The Starch Solution and the public website of Dr. McDougall's Health & Medical Center. Competitor details were last checked against their public website in September 2026 and may change.
What is The Starch Solution?
The Starch Solution is Dr. John McDougall's book and the name most people use for his whole approach. The diet is starch-based, low-fat and whole food plant-based: starches such as potatoes, rice, corn, beans and whole grains as the center of every meal, with vegetables and fruit alongside, and fat kept very low. There is also a self-paced Maximum Weight Loss mini-course.
Beyond the book, Dr. McDougall's Health & Medical Center offers an online 12-Day Program. According to their website at the time of writing, it includes daily private check-ins, three private one-on-one medical appointments, live lectures, Q&A sessions, cooking demos and behavior-change guidance, is capped at 50 participants, and is followed by weekly support calls for 8 weeks and then monthly calls for the rest of the year.
They also publish a great deal of free education, including an article on calorie density and a free version of the McDougall Program. The price of the 12-Day Program was not published in what we could verify, so check their site.
What is Lean With Plants?
Lean With Plants is 12-week one-on-one coaching for women, and only women. Most clients are in their forties, fifties and sixties, some in their seventies, and one is in her eighties. Chelsea Mae founded it after a decade of being vegan, having a baby in 2018, eating healthy vegan food and not losing weight. She lost 40 pounds without counting calories and has kept it off for around seven years.
The program stands on three pillars, described fully in the method:
- Nutrition through calorie density. Oil at roughly 4,000 calories per pound versus non-starchy vegetables at roughly 100: about a 40x gap. Nothing is counted or weighed. Your coach teaches you to see the density on your plate. See calorie density explained.
- Fitness and movement, starting at Rep Zero and building strength to protect muscle and bone density.
- Accountability and habits through the STACK Method: three or four tiny daily habits, about two minutes each. See what is the STACK Method.
You photograph your meals in the LWP app, and your dedicated coach messages you daily until you can build a weight-loss-optimized plate anywhere. There is a weekly community group coaching call and a Q&A every two weeks with Chelsea or Ami. All calls are recorded and everything lives in the LWP app.
Is the food the same?
Very nearly. If you put a McDougall dinner and a Lean With Plants dinner side by side, most people would struggle to tell them apart: a big pile of potatoes or rice, beans or lentils, plenty of vegetables, fruit, very little added fat.
Where Dr. McDougall says "starch-based", we say "calorie density", but the plates converge because starches are the moderate-density center that keeps you full, and non-starchy vegetables and fruit are the low-density volume. Both approaches keep fat low because fat is where the calories hide. Both approaches say potatoes are your friend, and we have said so at length in the potato, the most underrated weight loss food.
Ami's story is the clearest illustration. After years of yo-yo dieting she read The Starch Solution and How Not To Die, started eating starches, fruits, vegetables and legumes, and lost 66 pounds on a whole food plant-based diet using calorie density and habit formation. She now leads coaching at Lean With Plants and co-hosts our Q&A calls. That is not the story of someone who disagrees with Dr. McDougall.
The one difference on food is strictness. Dr. McDougall's program is fully plant-based and low-fat as a rule. Lean With Plants is a vegan company, but we coach women who are 80 to 90% plant-based and whose families are not plant-based at all. We optimize the plate you actually eat rather than requiring the ideal one. See do you have to be vegan for Lean With Plants.
How is the delivery different?
This is where the two really part ways.
Dr. McDougall's 12-Day Program is a medical-center program, open to everyone, that runs intensively for 12 days. Per their site: daily private check-ins, live lectures, Q&A, cooking demos and behavior-change guidance, capped at 50 people, followed by weekly support calls for 8 weeks and then monthly calls for the rest of the year. That is an unusually long support tail for a program of its kind, and it is a genuine strength.
Lean With Plants runs for 12 weeks, one-on-one, for women. The intensity is spread out rather than front-loaded: your coach messages you every day for the whole 12 weeks, looks at your food photos, and coaches the actual meals you are eating. The habit work happens alongside, because in our experience the women who keep weight off are the ones whose routine runs on autopilot, not the ones with the most knowledge. Weekly group calls and the Q&A every two weeks add the community layer.
Put simply: McDougall is education-led with structured support, delivered to a group. Lean With Plants is coaching-led, delivered to one woman at a time. Neither is a substitute for the other, and reading The Starch Solution first is a fine way to arrive; it is how Ami did.

Who should choose The Starch Solution or the McDougall Program?
Dr. McDougall's work is the better fit if you:
- Are a man, or want a program open to your whole household. Lean With Plants coaches women only.
- Want the education from the source. The book and the free materials are excellent and cost little or nothing.
- Want a medical-center program with a defined intensive start and a long tail of scheduled support calls.
- Are self-directed and mainly need the right information and a strong start.
- Prefer a group setting with lectures and demos over one-on-one messaging.
- Want to eat fully plant-based and low-fat as a rule, and like having a clear standard to follow.
Who should choose Lean With Plants?
Lean With Plants is the better fit if you:
- Are a woman in your forties, fifties or sixties, and want a program built entirely around women at that stage, including menopause. See the best weight loss program for menopause.
- Have already read The Starch Solution (or similar) and the weight is still not moving. That is the single most common story we hear.
- Want a real person looking at your actual plate every day for 12 weeks and adjusting to your actual week.
- Want habits and strength built in alongside the food, not just the diet.
- Do not want to be 100% plant-based, or live with people who are not.
- Have started strong before and faded by week five. Tracy lost 20 pounds in 12 weeks with us after a lifetime of yo-yo dieting. Dana lost 60 pounds total, 35 of them after a long plateau, while working two jobs and traveling constantly.
Molly, in her sixties, lost 33 pounds in 18 weeks and reached her smallest size in 28 years. Janie, in her seventies, lost over 40 pounds and held her habits through a hard family season. More on the success stories page.
What does each one cost?
The price of Dr. McDougall's 12-Day Program was not published in what we could verify; check their site. Lean With Plants does not publish a price either. It is discussed on a free 45-minute Zoom call with someone from the LWP team. It is not cheap, and it is not comparable to a book, but it is not the number most women imagine. We partner with Klarna and Affirm for payment plans. See how much does Lean With Plants cost.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lean With Plants based on The Starch Solution? Not formally, but the food is very close. Both are starch-centered, low-fat, whole food plant-based, and both rely on calorie density rather than counting. Our Head of Coaching, Ami, read The Starch Solution and it changed how she ate.
Can I eat McDougall-style while I am in Lean With Plants? Yes. A McDougall plate is already a low-density plate. Your coach will build the habit and strength work around it and help with the real-world weeks when the plate slips.
Is Dr. McDougall's program for women only? No. According to their site, the 12-Day Program is open to everyone and capped at 50 participants. Lean With Plants is for women only.
Which one has more support? Different kinds. The McDougall 12-Day Program offers daily private check-ins during the 12 days, then weekly calls for 8 weeks and monthly calls for the rest of the year, per their site. Lean With Plants offers daily one-on-one messaging with a dedicated coach for 12 weeks, plus weekly group calls and a Q&A every two weeks.
What is Maximum Weight Loss? It is a self-paced mini-course from Dr. McDougall's team, separate from the 12-Day Program. We have not reviewed it in detail, so read their materials for how it differs. Lean With Plants does not have a named variant; your coach adjusts your plate to your results instead. See weight loss plateau, what to do.
Do I have to be fully plant-based for Lean With Plants? No. 80 to 90% plant-based works, and clients whose families are not plant-based are normal. Lean With Plants is not for carnivore or keto eaters.
Which one should you pick?
If you want the education straight from Dr. McDougall, or you are a man, or you want a medical-center program with a long tail of scheduled support, his program is the better fit and we would say so.
If you are a woman over 40 who has read the book, knows the plate, and needs someone in your corner every day for 12 weeks, apply and book a free strategy call. It is a 45-minute Zoom call with someone from the LWP team about where you are, what caused the weight gain, your real goal, and how to close the gap. If we do not think it will work for you, we will tell you.
