Vegan Superhero Academy vs Lean With Plants: An Accurate Comparison

Two one-on-one plant-based coaching programs that overlap more than most, and the three questions that decide which one fits you.

By Chelsea Mae · September 28, 2026 · 10 min read

Vegan Superhero Academy and Lean With Plants are both one-on-one plant-based coaching programs, so this is a closer comparison than most. Vegan Superhero Academy, the coaching program of The Vegan Gym, is mixed-gender, fitness-forward and built on calculated macros, with a medical doctor and a dietitian on the team. Lean With Plants is a 12-week one-on-one plant-based weight loss coaching program for women founded by Chelsea Mae Cullen, built on calorie density, where nothing is counted or weighed and a dedicated coach messages you daily in the LWP app. We have coached over 3,000 women, most in their forties, fifties and sixties, and the average client loses around 18 pounds in 12 weeks. Which one fits comes down to your gender and age, whether you want to track macros, and how much of your goal is about the gym.

Everything we say about Vegan Superhero Academy below comes from their public websites (thevegangym.com and vegansuperheroacademy.com). Competitor details were last checked against their public website in September 2026 and may change.

What is Vegan Superhero Academy?

Vegan Superhero Academy (often shortened to VSA) is the coaching arm of The Vegan Gym. According to their website at the time of writing, The Vegan Gym launched in 2017 and has coached vegans one-on-one since 2018. It was founded by brothers Anders and Leif Arnesen. Leif is an NSCA-certified personal trainer, certified in plant-based nutrition, and host of The Vegan Gym Podcast.

Their site describes the team as led by a medical doctor (Dr. Daphne Bascom, MD, PhD, their COO) and a dietitian, supported by certified health coaches, and says the whole team is 100% vegan. That is a genuine strength; few coaching programs in this space have an MD and a dietitian on staff.

The format, per their site, is one-on-one coaching: a 1-on-1 coach in your corner, 24/7 messaging access to that coach, group coaching, and a community of like-minded vegans. Their COO describes the approach as holistic, covering nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, sleep and community. They also run an annual in-person retreat.

On nutrition, their approach is macro-based. Their blog says macros are calculated for all clients and recommends tracking calories and macros in the Cronometer app, and their free calculator gives personalized calorie, macro and micronutrient targets. Their site promises "absolutely zero guesswork". There is a strong resistance-training and workout-program component.

It is for men and women. Their site has separate pages for guys and girls, describes clients as "busy people", shows testimonials from clients aged 40 to 74, and includes a menopause bonus program called Menopause Mastery. Their site does not state a fixed program length; the consultation call sets a timeline, and their success stories cite 90-day results. Their pages cite 3,000+ vegans helped (older pages say 2,000+ and 2,500+), and they have more than 700 reviews on Trustpilot, rated 4.9 out of 5 when we checked in September 2026.

Price is not published on their site; it is given on a free consultation call, with flexible payment options. They advertise a results-based promise tied to monthly weight loss; the terms are on their site. Free resources include a "Plant-Powered Body" course, a plant-based nutrition calculator and the podcast.

What is Lean With Plants?

Lean With Plants is 12-week one-on-one coaching for women, and only women. Most clients are in their forties, fifties and sixties, some in their seventies, and one is in her eighties. Chelsea Mae founded it after being vegan for over a decade and still not losing weight; she lost 40 pounds without counting calories and has kept it off for around seven years. Her story is in my story.

The program has three pillars, described in full in the method:

  1. Nutrition through calorie density. Oil is roughly 4,000 calories per pound. Non-starchy vegetables are roughly 100. That 40x gap is why our clients eat a large volume of food, feel full, and lose weight without counting anything. See calorie density explained.
  2. Fitness and movement, starting at Rep Zero: build the habit of showing up first, then build strength to protect muscle and bone density.
  3. Accountability and habits through the STACK Method: three or four tiny daily habits, about two minutes each. See what is the STACK Method.

Day to day, you photograph your food in the LWP app and your dedicated coach coaches you until you can build a weight-loss-optimized plate anywhere. She messages you daily, and she is a real person, not a bot and not a group chat with 200 women. There is a weekly community group coaching call and a Q&A every two weeks with Chelsea or Ami, our Head of Coaching.

You do not have to be fully vegan. Lean With Plants is a vegan company, but 80 to 90% plant-based works.

How do the two approaches to food differ?

Vegan Superhero Academy is macro-based. According to their site, macros are calculated for every client, and their blog recommends tracking in Cronometer. Macro tracking works for a lot of people, particularly people who like data or are building muscle deliberately. We could not confirm how VSA handles oil or calorie density, so we will not guess.

Lean With Plants does not count, weigh or measure anything, ever. Our clients learn to see calorie density on the plate: which foods deliver volume for few calories, and which pack calories into a small space. Your stomach measures volume and weight, not calories, so the plate is built to fill you up on fewer of them.

Neither approach is wrong. If you enjoy tracking, macros are a legitimate route. If tracking has made you anxious before, or you simply stopped after three weeks, calorie density was built for you. See lose weight without counting calories.

Both are one-on-one coaching with message access to your coach. We could not confirm which app or platform VSA uses, so we will not name one. At Lean With Plants everything runs through the LWP app.

What about exercise?

Vegan Superhero Academy is fitness-forward. Co-founder Leif Arnesen is an NSCA-certified personal trainer, the program has a strong resistance-training and workout-program component, and it grew out of The Vegan Gym. If you like the gym and want to get noticeably stronger, that emphasis is a real advantage.

Lean With Plants treats movement as the second pillar. It starts at Rep Zero, where the first win is simply showing up, and strength is built from there to protect bone density and muscle. Kelsey lost 15 pounds in 12 weeks with us and now does 15 or more pull-ups, so strength is very much on the table; it just comes in behind the food and the habits.

Who is Vegan Superhero Academy a better fit for?

This is a good program for the people it is built for. Choose Vegan Superhero Academy if you:

  • Are a man. Lean With Plants does not coach men, and VSA does.
  • Are already vegan and want a team that is 100% vegan, with an MD and a dietitian involved.
  • Like tracking. If calculated macros feel like clarity rather than a chore, you will probably enjoy their approach.
  • Want a gym-focused program with a serious resistance-training component and a co-founder who is a certified trainer.
  • Want a holistic approach that also covers stress and sleep, or the option of an annual in-person retreat.

Who is Lean With Plants a better fit for?

Choose Lean With Plants if you:

  • Are a woman in your forties, fifties or sixties, and want a program built entirely around women at that stage of life, including menopause.
  • Are done counting anything. Not macros, not calories, not points. Ever.
  • Have been plant-based or vegan for years and are still stuck, which is the most common story we hear.
  • Want daily one-on-one messaging with a coach who looks at your actual plate, and a habit system designed to keep running after the 12 weeks end.
  • Are not fully vegan and do not want to be. 80 to 90% plant-based works with us.
  • Have a health picture that needs working around: many clients have diabetes, prediabetes, hypothyroidism or PCOS, or are coming off GLP-1s. (We do not work with women who have had a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.)

Rena, 62, lost 24 pounds in 12 weeks post-menopause and went from binge eating to binge-free, without tracking a single macro. More stories are on the success stories page.

What does each one cost?

Neither program publishes a price. Vegan Superhero Academy gives its price on a free consultation call, with flexible payment options, according to their website at the time of writing.

Lean With Plants discusses its price on a free 45-minute Zoom call with someone from the LWP team, because people who see a number first rarely have the conversation that shows them whether the program solves their problem. It is not cheap, but it is not the number most women imagine either. We partner with Klarna and Affirm for payment plans. The reasoning is in how much does Lean With Plants cost. Ours is a sales call, and we say so plainly in the strategy call.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vegan Superhero Academy only for vegans? Their site is written for vegans and says the team is 100% vegan, but we could not confirm whether you must already be vegan to join, so ask them. Lean With Plants does not require you to be fully vegan; 80 to 90% plant-based works.

Do I have to count macros at Vegan Superhero Academy? According to their blog, macros are calculated for all clients and tracking in Cronometer is recommended. At Lean With Plants nothing is counted.

Does Lean With Plants coach men? No. Lean With Plants is for women only. Vegan Superhero Academy coaches both men and women.

Which program is better for building muscle? Vegan Superhero Academy has the stronger gym emphasis, with a certified personal trainer as co-founder and a dedicated workout-program component. Lean With Plants builds strength from Rep Zero, but food and habits come first.

How long is each program? Lean With Plants is 12 weeks. Vegan Superhero Academy does not state one fixed length; the timeline is set on their consultation call, and their success stories cite 90-day results.

Can I do Lean With Plants if I am in menopause? Yes. Many of our clients are in perimenopause or menopause. Vegan Superhero Academy also offers a menopause bonus program called Menopause Mastery, according to their site. See plant-based through menopause.

Which one should you pick?

If you are a vegan man, or a woman who enjoys tracking macros and wants a gym-first program with a medical doctor on the team, Vegan Superhero Academy is the more natural fit and we would tell you so.

If you are a woman over 40 who has counted enough things for one lifetime and wants someone in your corner every day for 12 weeks, apply and book a free strategy call. It is a 45-minute Zoom call with someone from the LWP team covering where you are, what caused the weight gain, your real goal, and how to close the gap. If we do not think it will work for you, we will say so.
