Lean With Plants vs Forks Over Knives
Almost the same food philosophy, completely different products. One teaches. The other coaches.
Forks Over Knives and Lean With Plants are not really competitors, because they are different kinds of product. Forks Over Knives is a whole food plant-based education brand: the 2011 documentary, thousands of free recipes and articles, cookbooks, a magazine, an online cooking course and the Forks Meal Planner app. Lean With Plants is a 12-week one-on-one plant-based weight loss coaching program for women, founded by Chelsea Mae Cullen, where a dedicated coach works with you directly. They agree almost entirely about what belongs on the plate. The difference is that one hands you the information and the other stands next to you while you use it.
What Forks Over Knives is
Forks Over Knives started as a documentary in 2011, featuring the research of Dr. T. Colin Campbell and the clinical work of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, and it did more to put whole food plant-based eating in front of a mainstream audience than almost anything else. Today it is a media and education company. What they offer:
- Free recipes and articles, an enormous library of them, all whole food plant-based and mostly oil-free
- Cookbooks, including several bestsellers, plus a magazine
- The Forks Meal Planner, a subscription app that builds weekly plant-based meal plans with grocery lists and scalable servings
- The Ultimate Cooking Course, an online plant-based cooking curriculum with video instruction
- Educational courses aimed at both the general public and health professionals
It is a genuinely excellent resource, and we mean that. If you want to learn how to cook whole food plant-based meals that taste good without oil, the Forks Over Knives library is one of the best places on the internet to do it, and a large part of it costs nothing.
What Forks Over Knives is not, and does not claim to be, is one-on-one coaching or a weight loss program. It is oriented around health and cooking, not around a personalized fat loss outcome for a specific woman with a specific history. That is not a shortcoming. It is a different product.
What Lean With Plants is
Lean With Plants is a 12-week coaching program for women, built on three pillars:
- Nutrition through calorie density. How many calories are packed into a pound of food. Oil is roughly 4,000 calories per pound. Non-starchy vegetables are roughly 100 calories per pound. That 40x gap is why our clients eat a bigger physical volume of food, feel full, and lose weight without counting anything. See calorie density explained.
- Fitness and movement, scaled to your body and your week.
- Accountability and habits, through the STACK Method: small behaviors stacked until the routine runs on autopilot.
You work one-on-one with a dedicated coach who checks in and messages you daily in the LWP app, looks at photos of your plate and coaches you through the week, plus a weekly community group coaching call and a Q&A every two weeks. We have coached over 3,000 women, the average client loses around 18 pounds in 12 weeks, and most are in their forties, fifties and sixties.
Where the two agree
This is worth stating, because it is unusual in a comparison article.
Both approaches point at the same food: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, potatoes and lentils, minimally processed, with oil treated as something to minimize rather than cook everything in. If you put a Forks Over Knives dinner and a Lean With Plants dinner side by side, most people could not tell you which was which.
So this article is not about who is right about food. It is about the distance between reading a recipe and running your life that way for a decade.

The honest axis: information versus implementation
A very large share of the women who apply to Lean With Plants have already read the books, watched the documentary and cooked the recipes. Some of them have been whole food plant-based for years.
And they are still not losing weight.
That sounds like a contradiction until you look at the plate. Whole food plant-based eating is not automatically low in calorie density. A perfectly compliant day can include a generous handful of nuts, a few tablespoons of tahini dressing, avocado on the toast, a nut-based sauce and some plant-based convenience food, and land you a long way above where you thought you were. None of that is junk food. It is just dense. We explain the pattern in why some vegans gain weight and healthy vegan food and oil keeping you stuck.
A recipe library cannot catch that, because a recipe library does not know what your whole week looked like. A coach does. That is the entire difference, and it is why whole food plant-based weight loss is a slightly different skill from whole food plant-based cooking.
The second difference is what happens when the plan meets a bad month. Molly was in her sixties and lost 33 pounds in 18 weeks, reaching her smallest size in 28 years. Janie is in her seventies, lost over 40 pounds, and held her habits while her husband became seriously ill. Before Lean With Plants, a hard season meant the couch, snacks and wine. Neither of those outcomes comes from a recipe. They come from having a person and a system.
Who each one is best for
Forks Over Knives is the better choice if you:
- Are new to plant-based eating and want to learn what the food actually looks like
- Want to become a genuinely good plant-based cook, which the cooking course is built for
- Want free, credible, well-tested recipes with no commitment
- Are motivated primarily by general health rather than a specific weight target
- Are self-directed and have a track record of following through on your own
- Want meal planning and grocery lists handled without a coaching relationship
- Are budget conscious and want to start at no cost at all
Lean With Plants is the better choice if you:
- Have already been eating plant-based and the weight is not moving
- Know what to eat and do not consistently do it
- Want someone to look at your specific week and tell you what is actually going on
- Are in your forties, fifties or sixties, dealing with menopause weight or a long plateau
- Want a defined 12 weeks with a specific outcome and a coach accountable for getting you there
- Have bought courses and books before and have a shelf of them to show for it
Using both makes complete sense
Nothing stops you cooking from the Forks Over Knives library while you work with an LWP coach, and plenty of clients do. Good recipes and good coaching are not substitutes for each other. If you want a broader look at the landscape, we lay it out in the best vegan weight loss programs.
"Why would I pay for coaching when so much of this is free?"
It is a fair question and it deserves a real answer, not a sales line.
If free resources have worked for you, keep using them. We are not going to pretend that reading a cookbook has no value, and we would rather you cook from Forks Over Knives for a year and succeed than buy coaching you did not need.
The reason coaching exists is that for a lot of women, the gap has never been information. Sam lost close to 70 pounds with us and says plainly that she already knew what to do. She could not implement it until somebody was expecting her every week. Beth had tried more than 40 diets, which means she had encountered a great deal of correct advice already.
Free information solves an information problem. If you have a follow-through problem, free information is not a cheaper version of the solution. It is a different product entirely. That argument is laid out properly in Lean With Plants vs doing it on your own.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lean With Plants the same diet as Forks Over Knives? Very close on the food. Both are whole food plant-based and both treat oil as something to minimize. Lean With Plants adds the calorie density lens specifically for weight loss, plus movement, habit work and a coach. The recipes would look familiar.
Can I follow Forks Over Knives recipes while I am in the program? Yes. Your coach will help you sort which ones fit your goal as written and which ones need a small adjustment, usually around nuts, oil and dressings.
Does Forks Over Knives offer one-on-one coaching? Not as part of the core offer. It is an education and media brand: documentary, recipes, books, magazine, courses and a meal planning app. Coaching is a different category of product and they have never claimed to be in it.
I have been whole food plant-based for years and I am still not losing weight. Why? Almost always because of calorie-dense foods that are genuinely healthy: oil, nuts, nut butters, seeds, avocado, dressings and plant-based convenience food. Nothing there is bad for you. It is simply dense, and density is what decides the outcome. That specific problem is the most common reason women come to us.
Do I have to give up nuts and avocado? No. This is about quantity and placement, not prohibition. Your coach works out what fits where, based on your results rather than a blanket rule.
How much does Lean With Plants cost? We do not publish a number. Nobody running a high-touch, one-on-one coaching program does, because if people saw a number first, most would never have the conversation that shows them whether it solves their problem. It is not cheap, and it is also not the crazy number most people imagine. We partner with Klarna and Affirm for payment plans, and the real number, the one specific to you, your situation and what you need, is talked about on your call. The reasoning is in how much Lean With Plants costs.
Where to start
If you are new to this way of eating, go and use Forks Over Knives. Cook from the free recipes, take the cooking course, learn the food. It is a good resource and it will teach you something real.
If you have already done that, and the plate looks right and the scale does not agree, the missing piece is not another recipe. It is someone who can look at your actual week. That is what the LWP method and the coaching program are built around.
